Online Workshop (4 sessions): "Python for Digital Humanities: Introduction to Textual Analysis, via Zoom"

Lecturer: Dr. James Gawley, Sorbonne Université (Paris IV)

Date: 7th to 10th June 2022, each day from 2 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.

 

Course Description:

This beginners course will outline the most important concepts of experiment design for humanities scholars who wish to interrogate their textual corpora. If you have a group of texts that you would like to analyze automatically, this course will teach you everything you need to design, execute, and publish an experiment. No previous experience with programming is required. Pre-coded examples for all experiment types will be provided, ready for modification by participants.

1st half:

  • Variables, print statements, and objects
  • Python: introduction to the language and the coding environment
  • First scripts: from “Hello, world” to loops and list comprehension

2nd half:

  • Stylometry and authorship attribution
  • Manipulating XML
  • Training ‘neural net’ models on large corpora

To prepare for the workshop, participants are asked to download and install python and jupyter notebooks on their personal computers. Please follow the guide found at: https://realpython.com/installing-python/.
