economics/social sciences/law
How does society work? The main theme of economic, social and legal sciences can be condensed to this question.
The individual courses of study in this field of study are devoted to different elements of society (e.g. the legal system or economics) and examine these with different methods. Students in this field of study should have a good general education, good knowledge of modern foreign languages and an interest in economic, social, historical and political issues. Dealing with abstract texts and the ability to think and argue logically are of central importance here. Particularly in law, the ability to formulate precisely is essential. In the field of economics and social sciences, prospective students should also have good to very good knowledge of mathematics. This knowledge is required both when dealing with statistics and balance sheets and when developing abstract mathematical models. The field of economics / social sciences / law has a large number of interdisciplinary courses. The course "Economy, Society, Law - Good Governance", for example, combines all three areas. The master’s degree in Demography is unique, although students can also choose to specialize in demography in the Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences. In addition to the birth and mortality development, demography deals with the migration of people between places, regions or states. In Rostock, the focus is primarily on the phenomenon of the aging society. In this area in particular, there is very close cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research and with the Center for Research into Demographic Change. Many students of economics, social sciences and law benefit from these two internationally important research institutions based in Rostock, for example through interesting bachelor and master theses, but also through internships or employment as student assistants.
